During the deadly diphtheria outbreak in Alaska, life-saving antitoxin needed to be transported over 600 miles in harsh, icy conditions. Balto was the lead dog of the final sledge team, guided by musher Gunnar Kaasen, who braved blizzard-like conditions to deliver the serum to Nome.
